Orthopedic Research and Outcomes

The field of orthopedics is rapidly advancing, from the evolution of hip implants to the way that we prevent blood clots all as a result of research and the goal of providing less expensive and more convenient care to all patients. Similar to their predecessors who helped to revolutionize what it means to have a good outcome in orthopedics, our team believes that to be a leader at the top of orthopedic surgery you must not only be a great physician and surgeon – consistently producing superior outcomes but you must also remain intellectually stimulated – working on iterations of proven technique and researching ways to improve for patients and for the future of the discipline. Panorama is a dedicated leader in orthopedics, consistently providing excellent patient care that is backed by an increasing commitment to improving through research. Our talented team of surgeons are among the most dedicated to their fields, each one thriving on challenging cases and the challenge to improve their skills and their specialty.

Our surgeons from every service line work on collaborative research ensuring that we are able to offer our patients every treatment option from tried and true to the most cutting edge in evidence based medicine. We offer a unique combination of the resources and novel research of academia and fellowship trained and experienced physicians using their superior technical skill to care for patients within a private setting. Our primary goal is to produce the highest quality care and value for every patient.

As we continue to move forward, we remain on top of the rapidly advancing field of orthopedics. Our surgeons fly across the country and around the world to teach the newest techniques to their peers and collaborate with others on future improvements. Our practice is repeatedly chosen by top companies to run research projects on the basis of experience with research, technical skill, outcomes, resource pool and ability to handle studies.

If are undergoing a Joint Replacement at Panorama Orthopedics  you may be able to participate. Dr Kinder, Dr Foran and Dr Peace will head up this study and were selected to participate in a new collaborative research effort between Apple and Zimmer Biomet, This study will be looking at the potential to improve the experience of hip and knee replacement patients. The study will be one of the largest in orthopedic history and is meant to help keep patients on track as they progress through hip or knee replacement. In using the tools and system of this study, which include an Apple Watch and an iPhone paired with Zimmer’s mymobilityTM app, the surgeons and their patients will have unprecedented communication and data sharing both before and after surgery. Surgeons will be able to share exercises and educational materials throughout the process of preoperative preparation and post-operative recovery and patients will likely be have more support and guidance than ever before.

Using the results of this study and patient feedback, it is the goal that physicians and their patients will be able to make better informed decisions about how to proceed with surgeries and what steps should be taken to make the patient experience the best for each patient.

The surgeons at Panorama are particularly excited to be able to implement the newest technologies like that of this research study to help improve patient outcomes. It is the goal of Panorama that using the data from this study, the cost, recovery and standards of care will be improved within Panorama and across the board.

Optimal Surgical Outcomes for Patients

Panorama utilizes its vertically integrated system to provide the best value to patients, insurance companies and others. We consistently measure our patient outcomes using objective and subjective measures like infection rate or patient satisfaction. These outcomes are often used to define the quality of our care with respect to our peers.

When we are measuring outcomes, we are looking at many different items that may affect the results of our patient care. Some of the items we track when looking at outcomes are surgical approaches or techniques, implants that are used, even who is in the operating room – what their expertise is or what a surgical assistant’s training might be. Each of these items can be isolated to determine their effect on the overall outcome for patients.

As we analyze each of these items, we can improve the patient experience – we can measure how they relate to function as a reflection of their abilities post-surgery in terms of recreation, motion, lifestyle, strength and flexibility. Even a small shift in the care process can alter patient outcomes, therefore each of our service lines have identified specific metrics tools that have been peer reviewed to evaluate outcomes. Using these tools both pre and post operatively, we can subjectively measure the patient reported outcomes for pain, recreational motion, and functional improvements.

It is rare to find a private practice that so closely tracks this patient data, only elite practices like the Mayo Clinic or Rothman Institute are using these tools because of the required staff, resources and time it takes. The key to effectively gathering and reporting these outcomes to improve the patient’s experience is creating a process and system to measure and tack them. At Panorama, the process to gather these outcomes involves a pre-surgical survey and consistent post-surgical surveys with follow-up of up to two years. Using the information from these surveys, we can measure individual doctors, services and the practice as a whole, the information will be compared to national benchmarks and kept in a database for further understanding. Utilizing the database of outcomes, we can begin to analyze and extrapolate data points to understand what they mean and where we can improve – how every patient can benefit.

All areas of specialty at Panorama are participating in this patient centered program. In taking this extra step to improve our care process, we are making improving our skills a priority. Patient outcomes from all manner of surgery will contribute to this database – with special attention to knee, hip, lumber and cervical fusions, rotator cuff, ACL repairs, Hip Arthroscopy, total shoulder replacements, total ankle replacements, ligament repair in the ankle, and thumb arthritis.  In the future we will begin collecting outcomes on PRP Therapy and stem cell procedures. All in an effort to improve patient care through collaborative learning between patient, practice and provider.
