Meet James T. Johnson, MD

Dr. Jim Johnson is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon at Panorama Orthopedics & Spine Center specializing in sports medicine and the treatment of shoulder and knee injuries. His practice combines advanced surgical techniques with decades of experience caring for athletes at every level—from recreational athletes to collegiate competitors and Olympic champions.

Dr. Johnson has served as a physician for the U.S. Ski Team since 1999. For more than a decade, he worked with the U.S. Men’s Alpine Ski Team, providing medical care at World Cup and Olympic events and caring for some of the sport’s most accomplished athletes, including Bode Miller and Daron Rahlves.

After the birth of his third daughter, Dr. Johnson developed a particular interest in the health, performance, and unique orthopedic needs of the female athlete. He transitioned from the men’s team to the U.S. Women’s Alpine Ski Team, where he had the opportunity to work with elite athletes including Lindsey Vonn and Mikaela Shiffrin. His commitment to women’s sports continues today as head team physician for the University of Denver Women’s Lacrosse team.

That experience has strengthened Dr. Johnson’s interest in understanding the anatomical, biomechanical, and physiologic differences that can influence injury patterns in female athletes—particularly injuries involving the knee, ACL, and patellofemoral joint.

Dr. Johnson’s shoulder practice focuses on complex procedures including arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, shoulder instability surgery, anatomic and reverse total shoulder replacement, and elbow pathology of the biceps and triceps. His knee practice includes minimally invasive ACL reconstruction, cartilage restoration, meniscus surgery, and treatment of patellar instability.

His approach to patient care recognizes that recovery from an orthopedic injury involves more than simply repairing the anatomy. He emphasizes the physical and mental aspects of recovery and works with each patient to establish realistic goals for returning to the activities that are important to them.
