Medical icon Michael Ellman, MD

Dr. Mike Ellman is an integral part of the Denver sports medicine team at Panorama Orthopedic and Spine Center. Dr. Ellman, most recently with the Steadman Clinic in Vail, is a fellowship trained, board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip, knee and shoulder injuries.

Dr. Ellman brings with him unique experience in treating athletes of all ages. He has a special interest in hip arthroscopy and the treatment of femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) and hip labral tears. Young and middle-aged athletes, including those involved in running, hockey, soccer, volleyball, golf, and dancing, are at higher risk for developing pain associated with FAI and labral tears. In the past, many of these injuries went undiagnosed and untreated, but thanks to new techniques used by a select group of surgeons – including Dr. Ellman – physicians are able to successfully treat this injury.

“My goal is to deliver the highest-quality care to each and every patient that walks through my door, from weekend warriors to professional athletes,” he said. “I do my best to help patients achieve their goals, whatever they may be.”

Dr. Ellman completed his orthopaedic residency training at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. As a resident, he published over 50 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters focused on cartilage biology, biochemical pathways involved in osteoarthritis, and orthopedic surgical techniques, and was awarded the American Academy of Orthopaedics Baxter Healthcare Scholarship for his research in hip arthroscopy. Dr. Ellman also participated in sports team coverage for the Chicago Bulls, Chicago White Sox, DePaul University’s men’s and women’s soccer teams, and several local high school football teams.

Following residency, Dr. Ellman went on to complete a one-year fellowship in sports medicine and hip arthroscopy at the Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colorado. During this time, he trained under world-renowned surgeons in the field of hip, knee, and shoulder arthroscopy, and traveled to Chile and Austria as the team physician for the United States Alpine and Boardercross teams. He currently serves as a consultant team physician for the United States Olympic Ski and Snowboard teams.

Dr. Ellman is a member of American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery (AAOS)  and American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM). In addition to his substantial contributions to the written literature,  he has presented over 50 abstracts, video presentations, and surgical techniques at national and international meetings.

Outside of work, Dr. Ellman enjoys spending time with his wife and three daughters. You’ll also find him cheering on the Michigan Wolverines, as well as participating in a variety of outdoor activities and sports, including hiking, biking, basketball, and skiing.

Dr. Ellman and his team see patients in Golden, Highlands Ranch and DTC.  View Dr. Ellman’s Healthgrades profile and reviews here.
