If they do cover knee scooter costs, they often will want you to get the knee scooter through a specific medical supply facility/provider. Your insurance should be able to provide that information for you.

Call the medical supply facility and find out what information they need from our office (they may want a prescription with specific information included, please ask insurance or facility what is needed) and where the prescription can be faxed. You can then call the office to give us the information and fax number for us to send the prescription. You can also have the facility where you are getting your knee scooter to fax us a request.

  1. Please note that there will be several entities billing separately for your surgery:
    • surgeon
    • anesthesiologist
    • facility
  2. We will work with you to help you understand your benefits as you may have a deductible or co-insurance to meet before your insurance pays anything.  It is always best for you to contact your insurance and check your in-patient and out-patient surgical benefits prior to your surgery.
  3. You may require durable medical equipment (DME) or physical therapy for your recovery which will also result in separate charges.  The DME team can be reached at 720-497-6126 or by email at DMEstaff@panoramaortho.com
  4. Most procedures allow 90 days of office visits included in your postoperative care during follow up from surgery.  However, x-rays and cast changes are billable within those 90 days.
  5. For some procedures with newer techniques, the insurance may consider the procedure to be “investigational or experimental” and may not want to cover all or part of your procedure.  If that is the case, you will be notified prior to surgery and a deposit and waiver may be necessary to proceed.
  6. Prior to your surgery, our authorization team will contact your insurance company and get the procedure pre-approved. Some procedures do not require pre-authorization; authorization will always be confirmed.  Authorization is not a guarantee of payment.  That means that the insurance company can still deny procedures after they are performed.
  7. If you have a deductible to meet with your insurance policy, our pre-surgical collections team will contact you to pre-collect towards your out-of-pocket requirement.  The facility may also want to pre-collect too, so we will coordinate so as not to over-collect.  If no prepayment is required, our team will not reach out to collect.
  8. If you have no insurance* We will pre-collect towards any elective procedure and we will help provide contact information so that you may obtain quotes from all parties involved in your surgery.
  9. Our pre-surgical collections team can be reached at 720-497-6104 or by email at preprocedurecollections@panoramaortho.com
  10. If you are under workers’ compensation* Our work comp team can be reached at 720-497-6131 or WorkComp@panoramaortho.com
  11. Our billing team can be reached at 720-497-6637 or CustomerServiceTeam@Panoramaortho.com if you have any questions.

Please allow the surgery coordinator 7-10 business days to process the surgery orders before you are contacted. Please note that when you are seen/surgery orders are entered you are placed in the physician’s surgery queue, and all patients will be contacted to schedule in that order only.

All Worker’s Compensation and Auto Claims require authorization prior to scheduling surgery.  This may take two (2) weeks or longer. Please be patient and understand the surgery coordinator will contact you once authorization has been obtained from the workers compensation insurance company.

Please do not contact the surgery coordinator. If you do not receive a phone call after 5-7 business days,  Please call the surgery scheduler, or central office number to ask for the Work Comp point person, at that time to inquire about authorization to schedule.

Scheduling Your Surgery:

A surgery coordinator will be contacting you within the next several days to work on getting a date set for your surgery. Dr. Deol operates at:

His standard surgery days are Tuesdays and Fridays.

1) The surgery scheduler is not allowed to give out time of surgery. The facility coordinates the time of your case. The facility will call you 1 business day prior to your surgical date.

Postoperative

Immediately After Surgery

You are advised to go directly home from the surgery center or hospital after surgery.  Patients are NOT allowed to drive themselves home, so please arrange transportation home and plan to have someone with you for the first night.

  • Please check your discharge instructions from the hospital/surgery center outlining your weight bearing status.

  • If you are Non weight bearing (no weight allowed on operative extremity) please arrange to have crutches, a walker, a knee scooter, or wheelchair to accommodate this status. Please review the information included in the surgery packet about a Roll-a-bout type device (knee scooter) and contact the listed vendors for arrangements to obtain one of these.

  • If you need a wheelchair, please contact your insurance regarding coverage and where to obtain this/prescription requirements.

It is common to have effects from the block for 24-48 hours and this may last up to 72 hours.  It is also common to experience some residual numbness and tingling several weeks post-op.

  • Call our office immediately if you experience any of the following and ask to speak with Triage/NotifyMD- 303-233-1223.

  • Fever over 101.5° by mouth

  • If pain is unmanageable by pain medication, consider icing, elevating the extremity more often.

  • Increased swelling (associated with increased pain) around or below the operative areas.

  • Uncontrolled nausea or vomiting.  Please be aware some pain medications may cause nausea or vomiting.  If this is a side effect you experience, please contact our office immediately.

  • Blood soaked dressing or increased drainage from the surgical area.  **If bleeding through the dressing, please contact our office immediately.  We may have you make arrangements to come in to the office to place you in a different cast/ splint and check the bleeding.

  • Calf pain- Extreme calf tightness, constant throbbing pain, different than normal tenderness in your calf.  Contact our office immediately or go to your nearest Emergency Room as this is a sign/ symptom of deep venous thrombosis.

  • Chest pain, difficulty breathing, or change in mental status– CALL 911 immediately.

Postoperative Meds and Recovery

Post Operative Pain Management & Narcotic/Opioid Prescriptions

Post operative pain medication is sent the night before surgery to your pharmacy listed on file in your patient chart.

You will experience pain associated with surgery. We do NOT expect you to have zero pain. The goal is to manage your pain appropriately and safely. Opioid pain medication can cause sedation, depression, tolerance, dependence, abuse, impaired breathing, constipation, nausea, or itching. Opioids can contribute to hospital readmission and even death.

If you had a nerve block, please note it is difficult to predict when they will wear off – but in general, blocks of the lower leg done behind the knee will typically wear off in 12-24 hours. If you had a block around your ankle it will typically wear off in 6-8 hrs. To stay ahead of the pain, start taking your prescribed pain medication before the block wears off. Once the block wears off you may titrate up or down with the prescribed dosage of pain medication.

We always recommend adding OTC pain medications in combination with your prescription narcotic/pain medicine!

Tylenol (Acetaminophen) is recommended to assist with pain. You may take up to 3,000 mg of tylenol in a 24 hour period. You may take 500 mg tablets every 4 hours, 650 mg tablets every 6 hours or 1000 mg every 8 hours.

ADDITIONALLY, it is safe to also take OTC NSAIDs/anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen/Advil/Motrin/Aleve. Defer to medication bottle for dosing. Recommend 600 mg ibuprofen every 6 hours with food and water.

Weaning off the opioid pain medication will decrease risks for potential side effects. To begin weaning off the opioid pain medication, you will begin by increasing the time interval between doses (for example: if you take the medication every 4 hours, try to stretch it to 5-6 hours). Once you have achieved stretching your medication time interval, you can then begin to decrease the dose of the opioid pain medication (for example: instead of taking 2 tablets at a time, try to take 1 tablet). If pain medications are running low, need a refill, or you have questions or concerns about these medications, call Panorama Orthopedics prescription line Monday-Friday between 9am- 5pm, 720-497-6662 (unable to refill prescriptions during the weekend and holidays). Refills of opioid pain medication will be at the discretion of your surgeon based on your specific surgery and postoperative course.

Do not consume alcohol, marijuana or drive while taking opioid pain medications.

Even if you have regular bowel movements prior to having surgery, you are likely to experience postoperative constipation. Exposure to anesthetics and narcotics, reduced fluid intake and reduced physical activity contribute to this constipation.

We recommend taking ColaceMiralax, Milk of Magnesia or any stool softener.

The risk of developing a blood clot or DVT is always a concern after surgery. You will either be prescribed 81 mg Aspirin to take twice a day for 30 days post operatively OR a prescription anticoagulant/blood thinner will be sent to your pharmacy depending on your risk factors.

** While taking prescription anticoagulant you ARE NOT TO TAKE any Advil, Motrin, Aleve,

Ibuprofen or other anti-inflammatory medications. Again—please contact the prescribing physician to discuss stopping any prescribed medications while taking the blood thinner.

DVT (or deep vein thrombosis) is a harmful condition in which blood forms a clot within a deep vein, usually in the lower leg.

What are some of the potential symptoms of DVT? Pain (particularly in the calf) or sudden swelling in the leg, ankle or foot that is not decreased with ice/elevation – Unusual reddish-blue color in the leg – Unusual warmth in the leg – Visibly enlarged veins. If any of these occur, contact our office IMMEDIATELY.

A PE (or pulmonary embolus) occurs when a blood clot breaks free and travels through the bloodstream into the lung. This is a potentially fatal condition.

Chest pain – Shortness of breath –Rapid heartbeat – Dizziness or fainting – Unusual sweating or anxiety – Unexplained cough or coughing up blood.

(If any of these symptoms occur, seek medical help immediately – go to the ER.)

Postoperative Logistics

Driving
  • Do not drive until you are cleared by your surgeon or PA. Do not drive while in a post-op splint, boot or cast on the right lower extremity.
  • DO NOT DRIVE WHILE TAKING NARCOTIC PAIN MEDICATIONS.

The surgery coordinator will schedule your first post-op appointment for you (This will typically be about 2 weeks after surgery). If this information is not provided to you, please call, and speak to the surgery scheduler 720-497-6602. You can anticipate dressing change and suture removal at this appointment.

Please discuss any upcoming travel plans with the Physician/PA prior to surgery.

Time off work should be arranged between you and your employer. This does NOT mean that Panorama Orthopedics will take you off work.  Most of our patients will take off work for 1-2 weeks following their procedure and then be provided with restrictions.

Depending on the nature of your surgery, you will likely remain under some level of Work Restrictions for approximately 2-10 weeks post-operatively.  Work release/ restriction forms will be provided as needed.  Please contact your Employer or HR Department regarding your office’s policy or for any paperwork needed.

Your HR office should supply any FMLA or Disability paperwork that needs to be completed by our office. Please fax to us at 720-497-6755 or send it through the patient portal. Please be advised that you must allow 5-7 business days to complete the necessary paperwork, so please plan accordingly. PLEASE be sure to fill out an authorization form if you would like us to fax directly to an employer or insurance company, as we are legally prohibited from doing so without this on file. This form can be obtained at any of our front desks or can be e-mailed to you upon request.

Panorama Orthopedics can provide patients with a temporary/short term 90 day Application for a Handicap Parking Pass if the patient qualifies. The form must have an original signature from the Physician and can be picked up at any of our Front Offices. Please ask Dr. Deol/Molly PAC or our clinical liaison for this application.

Physical Therapy will be determined on a patient-by-patient basis.  This will be discussed at your first post-op visit with a provider.  We recommend patients contact their insurance in regard to benefits for Physical Therapy, co-payments, etc. and obtain information as to contracted facilities where they are allowed to attend therapy.  Please find a facility that is convenient and covered under your insurance, as you will be attending therapy several times a week if needed.

FAQs About Surgery

What time is my surgery?
  • The facility where you are scheduled will contact you about the time 24-48 business hours prior to accommodate for cancellations and medical needs for that surgical day.
  • It is the facility who decides what time your procedure will take place, not Panorama.

Insurance is contacted before surgery at least 2 weeks prior to ensure enough time to receive authorization/approval if required.

  • Fax number is 720-497-6755
All paperwork will be completed in 5-7 business days from the day it is turned in. There is no expedited service for paperwork.
Panorama Orthopedics will NOT take patients off from work past 1-2 weeks post operatively. Panorama Orthopedics provides restrictions only. If the employer is not able to accommodate those restrictions, it is the responsibility of the employer to take you off work.
Your paperwork must come with a signed release of medical information, which can be obtained at the front desk or e-mailed to you, for us to send to any insurance company or employer, otherwise we are not legally able to do so and will return the paperwork to you.

Panorama will provide only walking boots, braces or post op shoes (or crutches if you are not able to bring these). We do NOT provide walkers, or other equipment. You can obtain this equipment through medical supply stores or online.

  • Panorama cannot set this up for patients. If you wish to attend a rehab facility after surgery, it is your responsibility to set that up PRIOR to surgery.
  • 99.9% of the surgeries performed of the foot/ankle are NOT covered by insurance for a rehab facility. Be aware this will be an out of pocket cost to you and will not be reimbursed by Panorama.
  • Home health is sometimes covered depending on your insurance benefits and you will need to call your insurance to see if this is covered and select a home health facility. We can submit to your preferred facility for home health if they are accepting new patients. Typically this is PT/OT and sometimes nursing if needed visiting your home for a couple times a week.

Call 720-321-5431 (respiratory therapy) at OrthoColorado Hospital as they order this, not your Panorama surgeon.

All medications will be sent to your pharmacy on file the day of your surgery. If an anticoagulant (blood thinner) is being prescribed, this will be sent to your pharmacy ahead of time.

Yes you do have to have another responsible adult drive you to/from surgery and to be with you after surgery that night. You may NOT leave in a taxi/Uber/Lyft

If you are scheduled for surgery at Golden Ridge Surgery Center, this is their registration process and they cannot clear you for surgery until you have completed this. They use this info to determine if you need pre operative testing or clearances so please complete ASAP when you receive this. There may be overlap of information you have provided us and with what they ask, but the surgery center and Panorama are separate entities. If you have technical difficulties with this please call them to complete over the phone at 303-963-1500.
